The Cairns Botanic Gardens is renowned for having one of the best exhibitions of tropical plants in Australia, is a tropical paradise where you can explore the beauty of tropical plants, relax in stunning surroundings and learn about tropical flora and horticulture.   

We now have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Nursery Ganger to join us now! 

The primary function of this role is to maintain and manage the Cairns Botanic Gardens potted collection and display houses to an industry standard appropriate to a high profile Botanic Garden.  This role is a leading hand position who will work the Nursery Team Member & casual staff and provide training and assistance to the "Friends of the Gardens" gardeners. 

General duties & responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to: Collect seed and maintain seed bank collection point for species delivered through the nurseries, plant propagation, plant identification, operating irrigation systems, pest & disease management, pruning plants / trees, spraying, maintaining plant records register and labels, general labouring, weeding & trimming.  

As well as being qualified, the person we are seeking must be friendly, love learning and teaching and have a passion for plants.

To be considered for this role you must have:- 

  • Certificate 3 minimum in Horticulture (Nursery Stream) or related discipline commensurate with the position.
  • Current MR Class drivers licence
  • White Card (General Safety Construction).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in the production and maintenance of a diverse range of tropical plant families.
  • High degree of skill relating to identification, lifecycle and habitat of tropical plants.
  • Experience with automated irrigation/misting systems and nursery industry machinery.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and practical experience in plant propagation, pest and disease management, tree pruning and horticultural and agricultural chemical application relating to the nursery trade.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and Environmental Issues relevant to Nursery and Horticultural Maintenance Activities.
  • Demonstrated effective people management skills specifically in the areas of dealing with staff supervision, leadership, motivation and team building with an emphasis on open communications.
  • Highly motivated and able to work unsupervised at times.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop sound, professional and responsive working relationships specifically in the areas of dealing with the public and an emphasis on providing quality customer service with a “Can Do” attitude.
