Communications Officer

(Fixed Term Position until October 2018, with the possibility of an extension)

Salary Range: $73,211.45 - $76,257.62 pro-rata per annum

About the position: In a fast paced environment this role contributes to the effective and efficient operations of the Infrastructure Services Department by preparing and undertaking consultation and community engagement activities for Council infrastructure projects during their construction. 

What we are looking for: We are seeking a dynamic, customer focussed communications professional to work on a variety of infrastructure projects for Cairns Regional Council.  The individual we are seeking must thrive in a fast paced environment, have impeccable written and oral communication skills and have the ability to interact & develop a great rapport with a wide range of stakeholders.  You must also be well versed in writing public communication reports and materials, researching, contacting and managing stakeholders, organising public meetings and functions or displays, compiling public notices and conducting community engagement activities. 

What you'll need to succeed: 

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as communications, community engagement (or equivalent industry experience)
  • Extensive experience in community engagement practices and marketing activities.
  • Current QLD Drivers Licence.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply processes, principles and strategies for effective community engagement activities.  
  • Ability to undertake research and analyse issues and use this in the preparation of submissions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, set realistic work goals and use initiative in establishing and providing administrative and correspondence systems and services.
  • Accurate and proficient word processing skills and proficiency in the use of all Microsoft and Adobe software, including Publisher / InDesign or similar.
  • Demonstrated high level of communication and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on providing quality customer service to the public, key stakeholders, internal and external clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate technical concepts into plain English and the ability to consult with internal officers and members of the public and the ability to maintain effective networks and working relationships.
  • Knowledge of team processes and the demonstrated ability to contribute to a multi‑disciplinary team within a technical environment. 

Desirable Qualifications & Experience: 

  • Ability to obtain a White Card (construction industry).
  • Previous Local Government experience.
