Council plays a number of roles within its community and has a wide range of delegated powers under legislation and regulation to ensure that the community comply with a range of regulatory matters. This role ensures that the Regulatory Compliance team promote compliance and understanding of regulatory requirements within the community which relate to development, building, environmental protection and swimming pool safety to name a few! It is also critical to ensuring the values of the Cairns community are upheld and that customers receive a high level of service when communicating with Council.

A little about the team:

  • As the Supervisor Regulatory Compliance you will effectively lead a team of six officers who are responsible for undertaking investigations to ensure compliance with thePlanning Act 2016, Building Act 1975, Environmental Protection Act 1994, Local Government Act 2009 and other relevant legislation within the community.
  • The team conduct a variety of investigations which involve onsite inspections, interviews and office based research including report writing. The team work closely and apply critical thinking to resolve emerging and complex enforcement problems at hand.

About the role:

Reporting to the Coordinator Compliance & Enforcement, the key focus of this role is to:

  • Supervise the operations of the Regulatory Compliance Unit within the Regulatory Services Branch.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Regulatory Compliance Unit, including monitoring and effectively managing the activities of the Unit.
  • Assist the Coordinator Compliance and Enforcement to review, formulate and draft policies and procedures in relation to the operation of the Unit.

About you:

To be successful in this role you will require:

  • A current manual Queensland Drivers Licence.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification or extensive experience in investigations and/or enforcement, or another related field associated with Planning, Building or Engineering compliance.
  • Exceptional supervisory / leadership skills, including the ability to inspire and motivate teams and drive a strong professional workplace culture.
  • Experience and desire to drive continuous improvement and collaboration within the team.
  • Experience in developing procedures within a technical field.
  • Computer literacy, particularly with MS Word, Outlook & Excel.
  • A high level of knowledge and experience in the interpretation and implementation of legislation.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
