Position Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Infrastructure Services, Cairns Works Maintenance Branch for a suitably qualified and/or experienced Arborist to join our team now! 

In this newly created role you will provide professional and technical arboriculture advice and expertise in relation to tree management. 

Duties include but are not limited to: Pest and disease control, assisting with community awareness of tree maintenance, assisting with legal matters relating to Council trees, assessing development applications for approval on street works and impacts on existing trees and developing and monitoring tree management strategies that are based on acceptable arboriculture practices. 

To be successful in this role you will require:-

  • Diploma in Arboriculture or equivalent experience within the arboriculture industry
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence
  • Construction Industry General Safety Induction Qualification (White Card)
  • Working in Proximity to Traffic- Awareness Part 1
  • Current chainsaw certification level 1
  • Knowledge of tree management and experience in developing and coordinating tree maintenance programs in a tropical environment
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare tree assessment reports including risk assessment and management recommendations
  • Well-developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills including the ability to develop and maintain relationships with customers and stakeholders 

In addition to the above the following knowledge, skills and licence are highly desirable:- 

  • Current Queensland Medium Rigid (MR) class driver’s licence
  • EWP Ticket
  • Working in Proximity to Traffic- Awareness Part 2 Works Protection Methods
  • AC/DC Herbicide Operator qualification
  • Current chainsaw certification level 2 or higher
  • Overhead Powerline Awareness training
  • Knowledge or the ability to gain knowledge of Cairns Regional Council’s Street Tree Policies and Procedures
  • Member a professional arboriculture association
  • Experience in the use of MS Word, Excel, Access database and GIS systems
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance, EEO Policies and the ability to apply Occupational Health and Safety principles and practices to the workforce
